Switzerland, with its 26 cantons (states), is situated in the heart of Europe and borders on Germany, France, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein. There are German– and French–speaking cantons, one Italian–speaking canton and a canton in which Rhaeto–Romanic (Rumantsch) is spoken. The country is divided in three major regions: the Swiss Alps, the hilly center part, reaching from the lake of Constance to the lake of Geneva and the rough area of long fold mountains called Jura. In Switzerland, you will also find the highest mountains throughout Europe (e.g. the Dufour Peak: 4634 m o.s.l.). Although Bern is the capital, about three times more people live in Zürich (approx. 1 million). Overall, the population of Switzerland is over 7.3 million inhabitants. The government in Switzerland is called a "direct democracy". This responsibility may be the reason for the fact that most Swiss are highly open minded and politically well educated. The temperature will vary from typical summer heat wave to snowy winter times, especially in the famous skiing regions such as Gstaad or St. Moritz.
